STERIS targets May opening for new customer solutions center

Sterilization and decontamination technology firm STERIS (NYSE: STE) says construction on a new $11 million, 55,000-square-foot customer solutions center in suburban Cleveland is expected to wrap up in May.

Sterilization and decontamination technology firm STERIS (NYSE: STE) says construction on a new $11 million, 55,000-square-foot customer solutions center in suburban Cleveland is expected to wrap up in May.

STERIS employees are scheduled to begin moving in around that time and hosting customers in early summer, spokesman Steve Norton said.

During the cold winter months, workers focused on the interior of the building, but as the weather warms up, they’ll shift their emphasis to the building’s exterior, Norton said.

The idea behind the Mentor, Ohio, customer solutions center is to invite potential customers to the center to view models of hybrid operating rooms for hospitals and surgical centers. STERIS  makes the lights, tables, booms and communications equipment for the rooms that accommodate surgical and imaging procedures at the same time, as well a raft of sterilization products for use in medical centers.

Eventually, STERIS will integrate the planned medical mart in downtown Cleveland with its plans for the customer solutions center. Specifically, STERIS will discuss project-specific details with customers in Mentor and then shuttle the customers downtown to check out complementary products from other vendors in the medical mart, Norton said.

The medical mart is scheduled to open in 2013.

STERIS is looking to hire about 100 people for the center, in positions ranging from customer service to engineering to regulatory affairs.

Additionally, about 100 employees from STERIS’ Erie, Pennsylvania, location are expected to either move or commute to Northeast Ohio, with some of them working in the new center. STERIS is planning to shutter its Erie facility by the end of the year and shift about half of the employees to Mentor.

The company is planning a daily bus service for employees who want to continue working with STERIS while living in the Erie area.

STERIS employs about 5,000 people worldwide and 800 in Mentor.
