Backing off a bit from previous statements about the significance of being first, the chief of the company that’s developing Nashville’s medical mart said attracting a “critical mass” of health-industry tenants would be the decisive factor in securing victory in the three-city medical mart competition.

The developers behind Nashville’s proposed medical mart issued a statement hailing that the project’s future “has been secured” after the city’s legislative body approved plans for a $585 million convention center. However, that future hardly seems “secure” given the statement’s complete absence of any details of the medical mart project’s financing.

MMPI, the project’s Chicago-based developer, will give up plans to build the medical products showcase on publicly owned Mall C, according to a construction agreement presented to Cuyahoga County officials.

Cuyahoga County is close to a land deal that could keep a proposed medical mart off Cleveland’s downtown Mall.
