Pennsylvania Hospital surgeon Dr. Robert D Fry is resigning as chair of the surgery department of the country’s oldest hospital in July 2012 after six years in the position.

Fry plans to remain an active surgeon in the division of colon and rectal surgery, according to a press statement.

Pennsylvania Hospital dates back to 1751 when it was founded by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond.

Fry has worked at Penn Medicine since 2002 when he was appointed the chief of the division of colon and rectal surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Emilie & Roland delHellebranth Professor of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He was appointed chair of surgery at PAH in 2006 and medical director of the Surgery Center in 2007.

Fry has specialized in in colorectal cancer, ulcerative colitis, anorectal disease and Crohn’s disease. Has has served as president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and president of the Colon and Rectal Surgery Program Directors Association.

He currently directs the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, and is a former director of the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Howard Hurtig, president of the professional staff and chair of the department of neurology at Pennsylvania Hospital, will appoint a search committee to find Dr. Fry’s successor.
