The Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron and the University of Akron are planning to launch in January a semester-long educational program aimed at women entrepreneurs. The program will provide participants with access to experts, coaching by successful entrepreneurs, contact with cutting-edge technology and support in forming companies and licensing ideas.

Gov. Ted Strickland and Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut donned their high-tech marketing hats Friday, touting the state’s leadership in biomedical and health care innovation by announcing centers of excellence at 14 universities.

In its first year, the bioinnovation institute has hired an experienced CEO, launched five centers of excellence, attracted nationally recognized board members, and academic and clinical researchers.

Ohio’s public universities could transfer more of their research discoveries to companies that can take them to market — creating new products and jobs — under an amendment that was part of the recent budget bill.
