MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — MedCity News has been writing about the medical industry in Minnesota for some time now. But today we start covering that community full time. Thomas Lee, a familiar name in business journalism around Minneapolis-St. Paul, starts full time today as the MedCity News Service’s Minnesota Bureau Chief.

Adding Thomas to the team is a big moment for MedCity News as a company. The MedCity News Service covers the economics of health care from major medical cities and states. We started with Cleveland and the rest of Ohio. With the success there, we’re able to expand into Minneapolis-St. Paul and the rest of Minnesota.

Thomas is in charge of writing agenda-setting news from that state and providing intense coverage of the Minneapolis-St. Paul medical industry. He’s an ideal choice in the same way MedCity News Vice President and Ohio Bureau Chief Mary Vanac is a perfect fit for Cleveland: Thomas is a respected journalist who already has a deep understanding of the industry.

Before joining MedCity News, Thomas spent five years at the Star Tribune, most recently responsible for covering emerging/growth companies with a focus on medical devices, biosciences and health care. He authored an ongoing series called Honing the Edge that covered innovation in Minnesota and wrote the Strib’s Patent Pending blog.

Thomas’ mandate is simple: Publish empowering information about the medical industry in Minnesota for people who care about health care. He’ll handle everything from medical start-ups and deal flow to news from giants like Medtronic and Mayo Clinic. You can reach him at [email protected].

Thomas is among a series of notable changes. His hiring was preceded by the addition of Brandon Glenn, a former reporter at Crains publications in Chicago and Cleveland, as well as the trade magazine Medical Economics. Brandon serves as a general assignment reporter who covers news throughout the Midwest.

The growth of the business means I will rarely, if ever, write for MedCity News. I am moving full time to drive the business side of the operation. That means I’ll have more involvement with advertisers and customers from our custom-content business. In order to run a successful, ethical and trustworthy business, MedCity News requires that editorial production of the news service be separate from the day-to-day business operations.

All these announcements are great news for MedCity News and there will be more news to come. We’re in the midst of a site redesign that will give Ohio and Minnesota its own sections, as well as highlight other news topics, among other things. We also plan to expand opportunities for readers such as yourselves to participate and publish information you think people should know about.

Thank you for continuing to read MedCity News. You can contact me any time at [email protected].
