There definitely is a "valley of death" in the medical device field. It isn't a matter of culling, it is a matter of drought. We see several technologies that would benefit patients at a profit to the startup, but can't raise funding because the well has become so dry. There are noted successes, but far more unmentioned non-starters.

Deanna,

Interesting article - From what I've read from various sources, a large majority of traumatic brain injuries stem from incidents around sports, military and automobile accidents. Wouldn't it be something if an iPad app could identify an otherwise 'invisible' injury immediately? Outside of the obvious dramatic Star Trek like ability to diagnose this in realtime (is my inner geek showing?) this is HUGE. One statistic I read (see "The Silent Epidemic: Understanding the Impact of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury – Part I: Identification & Diagnosis" here: http://www.brookhavenhospital.com/seminars/the-silent-epidemic-understanding-the-impact-of-mild-traumatic-brain-injury-part-i-identification-diagnosis/ ) mentions that "Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) involves approximately 1 million people each year, most of which do not seek immediate medical attention." This was mostly due to the fact that they weren't able to identify the issue. That means 1 million people out that could be operating heavy machinery and endangering themselves. Shivers...

@AN, appreciate comment. non-compliance is common. but firing a patient is rare. We do explore the reasons for non-compliance which often can be resolved, or at least understood. Would be helpful if a dissatisfied pt would discuss issues with the physician rather than simply leave the practice. Successful relationships may take work to maintain them.

The doctor-patient relationship is a complicated one; however, doctors must recognize that patients are human beings first and foremost. If a patient is non-compliant, a doctor should address the issue with the patient in as much depth as possible. The problem with this is that doctors have too little time these days to spend with patients. Changing the culture of medicine so that doctors' efforts are spent on patients and not on paperwork is required.

As for why patients fire doctors, so often it is a matter of attitude. More often than not, patients want to be CARED for not simply treated as disease. Doctors who fail to exhibit a behavior of concern for the patient as a whole person are those who are most likely to be subject to being fired. Telling a doctor "I don't like your attitude" is intimidating for patients. It's easier just to leave the practice than to face a show down. I strongly encourage doctors to think about the fact that it is not simply a matter of what you say but how.

Is there senothimg in the water Americans drink? In the air Americans breathe? Have they lost all ability to think? Would they prefer a Hoover-esque laissez faire approach to an imploding banking system, taking pensions, 401(k)s, investments, and other savings with it? I’m not sure if the bailouts were the best approach but what would Republicans have done? Nothing? Seems to ne that Bush started the TARP program, as I recall. What was socialistic about the healthcare bill? It preserved and actually strengthened the private healthcare system by adding 30 plus million people to it. Yet there they were…..the tea partiers…..with their gray hair and their own socialized Medicare screaming, “It’s socialism!” Are they all corporate shills or just plain dumb?

After finishing med school with 120k+ debt in school fees, plus a yearning and a frustration for not yet having access to all the dough I want (which by now translates into *all the dough I deserve*), 5 cars, credit cards, etc...you think I'm gonna admit I was wrong and face losing my license? Think again! After all those med school years, I'm gonna get my Ferraris, my hot babes, my manshions!

Before you go rushing out to get an Esteem implanted do your research. As with any new medical arena, there have been bugs to work out. The latest phase of the Esteem is much better but there are some people that don't receive any more benefit from it compared to hearing aids, at least not under normative test conditions. I believe that we are on the right track and this is the wave of the future. But, are we there yet????

The Esteem and Cochlear Implant are for 2 different reasons as stated above. However, the misconception is that the Esteem can't be used for a sensorineural hearing loss. Not true...that's exactly for what it is used. To be a candidate for a Cochlear Implant you need to be deaf for at least a very severe hearing loss and not benefit from hearing aids. To be a candidate for the Esteem, you need to be in the moderate to severe hearing loss range. Rush Limbaugh doesn't have the Esteem because he's "deaf". My question is, if Rush has cochlear implants and not the Esteem, how can he promote it? It's like comparing apples to oranges. This may or may not be a great device, I think the jury's still out but just beware and don't believe everything you "hear" (pun intended).

From the strib comments section sums it up:
"I worked in her lab for about 6 months and I was astounded she was able to stay in a position of authority. There was something "off" about her ethics. After a series of white lies she kept asking me to tell other people I couldn't take it any more and quit. I left wondering how much of her work really was hers. Don't get me wrong, she did grab on to innovative ideas and tried to push them through, but it seemed mostly about her and not about the science."
She's Texas's problem now.

The core difference between GSK and AstraZeneca is an excellent case study in the blockbuster mentality.

AstraZeneca's demise was rooted in its senior management's unwavering commitment to mega-blockbusters, regardless of whether or not those candidates presented much real incremental clinical value and regardless of the fact that building such poorly differentiated candidates required a costly, margin-eroding payola scheme of advertising, rebates and co-pay cards, etc.

The seeds were sown over a decade ago and are best exemplified by the launch of Nexium, an enantiomer scheme hatched prior to the expiry of Prilosec which also relied on a 100% higher dose to attain a marginal superiority claim. Meanwhile management passed on an endless list of development programs which failed to promise 'mega-blockbuster' potential. All the while, an employee base and the public in general were further alienated by the hollow ring of management mantras like "Put patients first" & "Consumerism".

This misguided interpretation of 'consumerism' might be written off as standard business practice if it weren't for the fact that the majority of sales for Nexium are ultimately paid for by our GDP-devouring government healthcare entitlement programs and the fact that the science behind the brand was so thin.

AstraZeneca's blockbuster obsession didn't end with Nexium but rather has continued to present with an over-reliance on a succession of pipe-dreams including Crestor, Exanta, Onglyza and Brilinta.

Meanwhile, GSK has built a solid, diversified overall business and a much broader and diversified prescription drug business albeit at the cost of forsaking the obsessive pursuit mega-blockbuster successors to Zantac and Advair.

Now GSK can promise investors a sustainable business with real growth potential while AstraZeneca is left with the promise of a finite period of very good dividends.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." (Gandhi) Posted on Dr. Taylor's office door. Comments of Dr. Taylor being difficult may be true or not. We all have our prickly side. Those that learn to recognize the why for that prickly behavior in one and another may be able to work through those moments and advance the science or the common good, those that can't may lose great opportunities to be part of changing the future. Texas Heart Institute is a premier institution with many firsts in cardiovascular research as is the Univ. of Minn. I may be wrong but, maybe Texas Heart and Doris win this one.....

I disagree completely. 67% of physicians use social media professionally, and they want to re-purpose content that helps them educate patients and their peers.

Device companies like St. Jude Medical (twitter.com/sjmneuro, youtube.com/sjmneuro) offer a tremendous value-added service by sharing therapy education content on their sites that physicians can then re-share. It also connects them with new potential customers who find them in the social graph.

Yes, a company should thoroughly vet out the social sites that are valuable to its strategy, but otherwise this article seems myopic.

NOTHING about the #hcsm tag is for marketers. It is for serious discussion of healthcare and social media issues—not selling.

Ms. Rina Renno,

Bull Roar. The article is written by a woman. This has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with a disruptive, insecure showboat appropriately being shown the door.

"Because for someone of Taylor’s talents, her energies are probably better directed at coming up with the next breakthrough idea that will change medicine."

. . . . so another man can come along and reap the benefits of her work. Five months is very fast, and I don't care how "difficult" the personality (read "she is a woman") if it were a man he would still be there. What a sexist article! I would leave too and let it be known.

This doctor has manipulated the numbers to show the outcome that he wants. All you need to do is find a local prostate cancer support group in your area and you will find that most men there chose surgery and a few that chose other types of radiation other than Proton Beam Therapy. Most types of treatments need support after the procedure has been done because of the side effects of procedures. Proton patients play golf, ride bikes, run marathons and live life the same if not better after treatment.
If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, do your own research, don't trust your doctor or this article.
Diagnosed with prostate cancer at 44, treated with Proton Beam Therapy at Loma Linda, no side effects.
