Ohio boasts over 1,300 bioscience-related firms, according to BioOhio, the Ohio biomedical trade association.  The firms range in size from Fortune 500 to incubating startups.  While larger companies — Battelle, Abbott Nutrition, Cardinal Health, Procter & Gamble Health Care, Meridian Bioscience, STERIS, Boehringer Ingelheim, Philips Health Care and Hitachi — are located in Ohio, emergent bioscience companies — Arteriocyte, ViewRay, Athersys, Cleveland HeartLab, OrthoHelix and CardioInsight — continue to grow and attract market and investor attention.

Ohio’s bioscience industry is making an impact locally, nationally, and globally. Every year, Ohio bioscience companies and research institutions create jobs, export products and services, and deliver game-changing treatments to the marketplace and, most importantly, to patients.

More than 62,500 are employed by Ohio bioscience organizations. Since the year 2000, the bioscience sector in Ohio has added 10,222 jobs. During a time of declining employment nationwide, from 2004 to 2010, 413 bioscience-related firms launched operations in Ohio — an average of 59 each year. Biomedical companies can be found in 72 of Ohio’s 88 counties.
