The Akron, Ohio, company, which makes the radio modules that enable wireless medical equipment to communicate with computers in hospitals, grabbed the honor on the strength of 516 percent sales growth over the last three years. The company’s 2009 revenues were $9.4 million, according to Inc.

Summit came in fifth in the computer hardware category, trailing three California companies and one firm from Georgia. Overall, Summit ranked as the 588th fastest-growing company out of of 5000.

Summit got its start in 2006 by making radios for equipment used in challenging environments like industrial warehouses where steel shelving, stacks of inventory and the speed of vehicles often interfered with wireless signals.

Philips Healthcare is a big-name customer, buying Summit radios for its PageWriter cardiographs–portable electrocardiogram machines that show the electrical activity of the heart.

Three other Ohio companies–Lastar Inc. of Moraine, StarTech.com of Groveport and CompSource of Cleveland—were included on Inc.’s fastest-growing computer hardware manufacturers list.
