The Cleveland Clinic Wellness Enterprise has launched an iPhone or iPod Touch application that can help you manage the stress in your life — for only $1.99.

The app, called Stress Meditations, “focuses on the mind-body connection by providing users with eight different relaxation and mindfulness techniques that can be used on their smart phones any time, anywhere,” according to a Clinic release. It can be downloaded from Apple Inc.’s iTunes website.

For example, the Body Scan Relaxation module coaches users  to concentrate on their breathing and sensations to calm the mind.  Each of the eight meditations lasts between 20 and 30 minutes and uses a narration coupled with a soothing image.

“According to the American Psychological Association, 54 percent of Americans are concerned about the level of stress in their lives,” said Dr. Michael F. Roizen, the Clinic’s chief wellness officer and leader of its Wellness Institute, in the release. “This iPhone app can help train your body and mind to relax, potentially decreasing your stress level and increasing your overall feeling of peace and well-being.”

The application is based on the Clinic’s online Stress Free Now program, which aims to “impact your health destiny and change your life” through stress management. A year ago, the Clinic’s Wellness Tip of the Day free iPhone app got an honorable mention in CNET’s Top 5 iPhone fitness apps ranking. Both are part of the Clinic’s growing wellness practice.

Stress Free Now is part of the Clinic’s 360-5 program, which provides health and wellness information (and sells online programs and products) at a website, a retail store at the health system’s heart hospital and an online wellness store. And 360-5 belongs to the Wellness Enterprise, which commercializes ideas and sells wellness products developed at the Clinic’s Wellness Institute.

In January, Mayo Clinic launched a meditation app for iPhones — its first app from a partnership to develop and sell smartphone applications based on Mayo research. Both healthcare institutions are participating in the growing market for health and wellness mobile applications.
