Ohio is home to four of nation’s Top 10 health systems, report says

Four of the Top 10 health systems in the nation call Ohio home, according to a report from Thomson Reuters that analyzes health systems’ quality and efficiency.

Researchers from Thomson Reuters ranked 255 health systems across the nation, but listed only the Top 10, which was presented in an unordered list. The four Ohio health systems in the Top 10 are:

• Catholic Healthcare Partners in Cincinnati
• Kettering Health Network in Dayton
• OhioHealth in Columbus
• University Hospitals in Cleveland

2010 marked the second year for Thomson Reuters’ health system rankings. The four Ohio systems also made last year’s Top 10 list, as did the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, a coalition of hospitals that has since split up.

Researchers looked at eight metrics that gauge clinical quality and efficiency: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, 30-day mortality rate, 30-day readmission rate, adherence to clinical standards of care and federal patient survey scores, according to a statement from Thomson Reuters.

Among this year’s Top 10, eight call the Midwest home, with two in Minnesota–Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis and the Mayo Foundation in Rochester. Rounding out the list were Advocate Health Care in Oakbrook, Ill.; Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Mich.; Scripps Health in San Diego; and Banner Health in Phoenix.

The study was based on public data from the federal government.
