Akron General Health System has hired the chief executive of Sisters of Providence Health System in Springfield, Mass., to replace Alan Bleyer, who left last June to spend more time with his family.

Vincent J. McCorkle will take over as Akron General’s president and CEO on July 1.

“Vince McCorkle is an outstanding and highly experienced healthcare leader,” said Akron General’s chair Richard Fedorovich in a statement. “Our board is thrilled that we have been able to recruit someone of Vince’s caliber. We look forward to Vince guiding Akron General to the next level in the years ahead.”

Under interim CEO Michael Rindler, Akron General already was on the mend from a couple of tough years characterized by economic challenges and mounting competition for its patients. Rindler implemented a new mantra for the health system’s 5,700 employees: Be nice. Work hard. Accommodate, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Rindler also empowered doctors to make day-to-day operating decisions. “Michael assumed the leadership of Akron General during an incredibly challenging period,” Chief of Staff Dr. Mark Leeson said in the statement. “He quietly and thoughtfully led us by setting a positive example. Michael re-engaged physicians and employees, and we now collectively have a very positive view of our future.”

The financial results were beginning to show. At the end of 2008, Akron General’s operating loss was about $7 million, Rindler told the Beacon Journal in December. By the end of 2009, the medical center’s operating revenue exceeded expenses by $2.1 million.

McCorkle also led a financial turnaround at Sisters of Providence, where he has been CEO since 1997.

“In Springfield, Vince led a financial turnaround, created innovative joint ventures with physicians, developed innovative approaches to philanthropy and implemented a comprehensive strategic planning process,” Fedorovich said in his statement. “We look forward to working with Vince to formulate a new long-term strategic plan to build upon our successful revitalization efforts this past year.”

McCorkle was active in civic and professional groups in Massachusetts, Akron General said. He received a bachelor’s degree in English from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and a MBA from Widener University in Chester, Penn. He and his family plan to move to Akron this summer.

“With each visit to Akron General Health System (AGHS), I became increasingly inspired by the commitment of the board of directors, the leadership of the medical staff and the management team,” McCorkle said in the statement. “Their unwavering commitment to the mission of AGHS and the Akron community is palpable. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be selected to join them and serve as AGHS’ president and CEO.”
