Medtronic launches next-generation spine fixation system

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — The spinal and biologics unit of Medtronic Inc. has launched a next-generation version of the spine fixation system it helped develop to treat scoliosis more than two decades ago.

The TSRH 3Dx Spinal System offers two pedicle screws that can be used in several different positions, giving the system versatility for treating problems ranging from degenerative disc disease to spinal deformities, Medtronic said. The system that also offers alloy rods can be used in minimally invasive procedures.

In 1987, Medtronic collaborated with the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas to develop a system to treat scoliosis. That system led to the TSRH Spinal System – a hook, rod and screw system used in complex spinal procedures.

“The TSRH 3Dx Spinal System allows me to better match solutions to specific patient needs,” said Dr. Brett Scott, a neurosurgeon in Lexington, Ky. “It gives me confidence by marrying new technologies with a long clinical history of success.”

About 268,000 people suffer degenerative spinal conditions, deformity or injury, Medtronic said. The TSRH 3Dx Spinal System offers to these patients a spine-stabilizing alternative to fusion.
