This not only includes cultural beliefs and traditions but also disease processes and behaviors that affect health. This education has been extremely beneficial to me while caring for patients. Cultural awareness allows for more effective communication and assist in caring for patients from the cradle to the grave. If this is not already a component of medical education then it should be mandated. Most registered nurses have taken classes that focus on transcultural care.
