Sure doctors are on Twitter. But is there anyone you want to read?

Fake Delos "Toby" Cosgrove TwitterThere’s an increasing discussion about where to find the best medical reads on Twitter, the online social networking tool that asks you to publish thoughts no longer than 140 characters.

ClinicalReader.com asked well-known medical blogger Dr. Ves Dimov to create his list of the Top 30 medical Tweeple. Dimov turned his list into an online spreadsheet that anyone can access and submit nominees to.

The trick to a good Twitter account is being informative while still being conversational, and providing insightful and entertaining everyday commentary without being myopic or inane. This is a challenge.

There is a handful of medical people I’d like to see with a Twitter account. (Please note that the Twitter account image for Cleveland Clinic CEO Dr. Toby Cosgrove at right is a fake). But here some of the better Twitter users followed by the MedCity News Twitter account who may not make other lists:

  • @drrbradley: Emergency physician in Houston. Sample tweet: “Good CPR often results in broken ribs.”
  • @cuttingforstone: The account of physician/author Dr. Abraham Verghese. Sample tweet: “Medical Tests: “Does it work?” matters less than “Does it Pay?”: http://tinyurl.com/mrd48n
  • @grahamwalker: An emergency medicine intern in New York City. Sample tweet: “Just a reminder to anyone planning to visit a hospital/have an emergency: it is most definitely July. Newbies in charge.”
  • @doctorwes: Director of cardiac electrophysiology at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Illinois. Sample tweet: “Surgery going forward: ‘Residents are no longer necessities, they are niceities.’ “
  • @OFPC: Physicians from Ohio Family Practice in Central Ohio. Sample tweet: “Interesting: being married at midlife DECREASES risk of dementia http://bit.ly/pJWEh”
  • @clarkjf: A University of Cincinnati stroke researcher. Sample tweet: “RT @TallyCast: @andrea099 When I was an EMT, I once responded to a shooting that involved an argument over the last piece of chicken.”
