CWRU Alzheimer’s expert Mark Smith joins Anavex scientific advisory board

Alzheimer’s authority Mark Smith, a professor at the Case Western University School of Medicine, has joined Anavex’s scientific advisory board.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Alzheimer’s authority Mark Smith, a professor at the Case Western University School of Medicine, has joined Anavex’s scientific advisory board, according to a company release.

Smith is the executive director of the American Aging Association and editor in chief of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. He is a professor in Case’s Department of Pathology.

“His internationally recognized expertise in the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological diseases will be invaluable to us as we continue to advance drug candidates with the potential to provide disease-modifying treatments for these major diseases,” stated Dr. Alexandre Vamvakides, Anavex’s chief scientific officer.

Anavex is a Swiss-based company developing a pair of drugs that attempt to treat Alzheimer’s and hopes to begin Phase 1 human clinical trials on one of its drugs – ANAVEX 2-73 – later this year.
