The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is a failed agency that the public should not trust, Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. Steven Nissen told The Plain Dealer in a preview of a talk he’s giving Monday.

In a kind of FDA-under-Nissen preview, he says the chairman of the Clinic’s Department of Cardiovascular Medicine also thinks the agency should increase random sampling and inspections. He also said he’s felt pressure make test results sound more positive than they were.

Americans, he said, “need to look out for their own interest and be informed. To not assume that because something has cleared the FDA that it’s safe and effective.”
